I recently picked up a used copy of the "Tales of the Lance" boxed set for ad&d 2nd edition and am very impressed with it. While I understand some of the ire directed at the setting, I nevertheless remain committed to the notion that the original boxed set describes a world whose old school pedigree is no less "pure" than that of Greyhawk or Blackmoor. This edition of the D&D game included its own version of the lizard man, in the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (1977, 1981, 1983), and was also later featured in the Dungeons & Dragons Game set (1991), the Dungeons & Dragons Rules world of Krynn in the Dragonlance campaign setting, was introduced in the Time of the Dragon boxed set, in the “Rulebook of Taladas” booklet (1989), and also appeared in the Tales of the Lance set, in the “World Book of Ansalon” booklet ( 1992). But Forgotten Realms removes even the “comic relief” found in Dragon Lance (kinder, gully dwarves), and as it was 'comic relief' was a far cry from the amusing silliness I had always associated with AD&D.
